The word spring can make a tide description sound seasonal. In this expression it refers to a tidal pattern, not the arrival of warmer weather.
Focus on the range
NOAA’s explanation associates spring tides with new and full moons, when tidal ranges are generally larger. Neap tides occur around the quarter moons and have a smaller range in the usual cycle.
Range means the difference between high and low water levels. It is not simply another name for the height of one high tide.
Draw an illustrative pair
On paper, mark one high level and one low level, then another pair closer together. Label the drawings larger and smaller range. Do not attach real heights or times unless they come from an identified local prediction.
The sketch helps explain the vocabulary without pretending to describe a particular harbour.
Return to local information
A moon phase alone is not a departure plan or a reliable prediction of conditions at a specific location. Use current official local information and appropriate instruction for practical decisions.
Read the labels on a tide table before transferring a general concept to actual numbers. Knowing the term helps you read the information; it does not replace the station, date, units or other details that make a prediction usable.
