Elapsed Time and Corrected Time Tell Different Race Stories

The first boat across a finish line need not lead a handicap result sheet. To understand the table, find out which column records the time spent racing and which records the adjustment used for scoring.

Start with the column labels

Elapsed time describes the measured duration. Corrected time applies the event’s scoring method. The RYA explanation of Portsmouth Yardstick scoring distinguishes these two values. Other systems have their own methods, so a formula from one event is not a universal conversion.

Read an example without inventing a winner

Imagine Boat A has a shorter elapsed time than Boat B, while B has the better corrected result. Your note can accurately describe both observations. It cannot explain why without the applicable handicap values, scoring rules and any penalties or adjustments.

When saving a results screenshot, keep the headings and event name in the crop. A row of numbers without those labels loses the distinction that makes the result meaningful. For a club conversation, ask which scoring method the event used before debating what the finishing order demonstrates.
